Overcome Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be a debilitating condition that interferes with daily life and well-being. At Resiliency Mind+Body Medicine, we offer transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as an innovative, non-invasive treatment option for those struggling with OCD. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific brain areas, providing a new pathway to relief when traditional treatments have not been effective.

TMS for OCD in Orange County

Physician-Led, Integrative Care at Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be exhausting, time-consuming, and deeply disruptive to daily life. Many people try therapy and medications yet continue to struggle with intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and anxiety. At Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine, we offer a comprehensive, physician-led approach to OCD that integrates BrainsWay® Deep TMS with medication management, targeted lab testing when appropriate, evidence-based supplements, and full-spectrum psychiatric care to support meaningful, lasting improvement.

Can TMS Help With OCD?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation treatment that uses magnetic pulses to target specific brain circuits involved in OCD. BrainsWay® Deep TMS is FDA-approved for OCD and is designed to stimulate deeper and broader neural networks linked to obsessive thoughts, anxiety, and compulsive behaviors.

At Resiliency, TMS for OCD is delivered as part of a structured, physician-supervised treatment plan. Treatment is individualized and often paired with brief symptom provocation and behavioral strategies to enhance response, following evidence-based protocols.

A Full-Spectrum Approach to OCD Care

TMS is most effective when combined with comprehensive psychiatric treatment. At Resiliency, OCD care may include:

Thoughtful Medication Management

Medications such as SSRIs and other evidence-based options play an important role in OCD treatment. Our psychiatrists carefully tailor medication regimens based on symptom severity, past response, side effect profiles, and co-occurring conditions, with ongoing adjustments as symptoms change.

Evidence-Based Supplements

Select supplements may be recommended to support overall brain health and stress regulation when appropriate. These are used thoughtfully and never replace medical or behavioral treatment, and all recommendations are guided by clinical evidence and safety considerations.

BrainsWay® Deep TMS for OCD

BrainsWay® Deep TMS targets neural circuits involved in OCD symptoms, including areas linked to intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. For patients who have not achieved sufficient relief with medications and therapy alone, TMS offers a non-invasive option to reduce symptom severity and improve daily functioning under physician oversight.

Ongoing Psychiatric Monitoring and Care Coordination

OCD treatment benefits from consistent monitoring and support. Our team tracks symptom changes using validated clinical measures and coordinates care throughout TMS and beyond to support sustained progress and relapse prevention.

Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is a mental health disorder characterized by unwanted, persistent thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions can consume significant time and energy, causing distress and impairing daily functioning. Key symptoms of OCD include:

  • Obsessions: Recurrent, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause anxiety. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, harming oneself or others, and needing things to be symmetrical or in perfect order.
  • Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions. Common compulsions include excessive cleaning, checking, counting, and arranging.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) targets specific areas of the brain involved in OCD, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) — key areas involved in the neural circuitry underlying obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. By delivering magnetic pulses to these regions, TMS can help modulate brain activity, reducing the intensity and frequency of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

  • Reduction in Obsessive Thoughts and Compulsive Behaviors: Many patients experience a significant decrease in the severity of their OCD symptoms.
  • Non-Invasive and Drug-Free: TMS is a non-invasive procedure that does not require medication, avoiding potential side effects of pharmaceuticals.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: By alleviating OCD symptoms, TMS can help improve overall daily functioning and well-being.

At Resiliency Mind+Body Medicine, your journey to relief from OCD with TMS begins with a comprehensive evaluation. This initial consultation allows our team to assess your medical history, current symptoms, and treatment goals to determine if TMS is the right choice for you.

Once TMS is deemed appropriate, we develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. TMS sessions typically last about 10 minutes and are conducted five days a week for several weeks. During each session, you will sit comfortably while the TMS device delivers magnetic pulses to the targeted brain regions. There is no need for anesthesia, and you can resume your normal activities immediately after each session.

Our team provides continuous support throughout the treatment process, closely monitoring your progress and making any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal results. Our goal is to help you achieve lasting relief from OCD symptoms and regain control of your life.

At Resiliency Mind+Body Medicine, we provide compassionate, patient-centered care. Our experienced clinicians utilize the latest TMS technology and tailor treatment plans to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Deep TMS for OCD is an FDA-cleared treatment that targets specific brain circuits linked to obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. It uses specialized coils to reach deeper brain areas than standard TMS. It is approved for adults with treatment-resistant OCD who have not responded well to medications or therapy.
Individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of OCD, who have tried standard OCD treatments (SSRIs, therapy) without sufficient improvement, generally qualify. We also review overall health, any metal implants, seizure risk, and ability to attend frequent sessions. During the consultation, our Newport Beach team will assess these factors.
The typical course for OCD involves daily sessions, five days per week for 4-6 weeks, similar to depression protocols but tailored as needed. Each session usually lasts around 20-30 minutes depending on the coil and settings. Sometimes, augmentation or maintenance sessions may be recommended for lasting benefit.
Side effects may include mild scalp discomfort, headache, or tingling at the stimulation site during or after sessions. Some people feel fatigue or mild discomfort in the jaw or muscles. These usually subside with time or after adjusting the intensity. Serious risks are very rare in properly screened patients.
Many patients report reductions in compulsions and obsessive thoughts within 2-4 weeks, though full improvement may take longer. It depends on severity and treatment adherence. After completing the initial course, maintenance or booster sessions may be offered if symptoms return or to sustain improvements.

I can’t say enough good things about my experience at Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine, especially because of Cyrus, my TMS technician. He is skilled, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in his patients’ well-being.

Cyrus is present and attentive at every session, checking in on how I’m doing and my comfort level during treatment, answering my questions thoroughly, and quickly communicating any concerns to Dr. L so adjustments can be made when needed. I always feel supported and truly like I’m in the best hands.

I also want to recognize Jeffery (another TMS technician), Rylee (who is incredibly responsive), and Loren on the office/admin side, for their warmth and kindness. They bring so much positive energy and add to the professional, trusting atmosphere of the clinic.

I’m very grateful for the care I receive here and highly recommend this team to anyone considering treatment.

I rarely leave reviews, but I feel a responsibility to warn others about my experience at Resiliency Mind & Body Medicine.

The TMS treatment I received here was deeply disappointing. From the very beginning, I felt like just another number—not a patient receiving individualized care. They use the Brainsway machine, which I later learned is considered less effective than newer models. Even worse, they kept my treatment at low settings the entire time and never re-evaluated or adjusted my protocol, even though I repeatedly shared that I wasn’t improving. It honestly felt like no one was paying attention to my progress.

Communication with the office was another major issue. It was nearly impossible to get answers or call-backs, and when I did, I often felt dismissed. Loren Mendez was particularly cold and unhelpful and cold.

I left this clinic feeling worse—emotionally and financially drained. The lack of empathy, poor communication, and cookie-cutter treatment approach made me feel completely unheard. If you are considering TMS, please do your research and find a provider who takes the time to tailor your treatment, checks in regularly, and actually cares about your outcome. I wish I had gone elsewhere from the start.

TMS truly changed my life. I was debilitated by depression and anxiety for years. I had done a variety of therapy and mental health treatment and tried countless meds which helped alleviate some symptoms but never got me to a place where I felt like my anxiety and depression was manageable. I had a psychiatrist refer me to TMS and I haven’t been the same since. The experience at resiliency mind and body was more than I could have asked for. I truly looked forward to coming to my treatment everyday. My TMS tech, Cyrus, was so personable, and made me feel like my progress and treatment was important to him. I looked forward to updating him daily with my progress. I couldn’t be more grateful to have him as my tech. If you’re thinking about trying TMS I highly recommend the treatment especially at resiliency and ask for Cyrus!

I want to take a moment to recognize our two secretaries for their incredible work. They are consistently kind, patient, and attentive, and they truly care about everyone they help. Their professionalism, organization, and positive attitude make the office run smoothly every day. They go above and beyond to make people feel supported and valued, and their dedication does not go unnoticed. We are so lucky to have them. Thank you Rylee and Loren!

I have never before found a psychiatric group that is so clearly dedicated to making people better. I finally feel like I am under the category of of caring CAPABLE people and I cannot wait to see where they guide me in regards to my future mental health care. Would HIGHLY recommend especially if you are tired of being treated like just another appointment. Resiliency will treat you like a human. A+

***After months of treatment with Resiliency Mind & Body—treatment that spanned everything from Spravato and medication management to TMS and—dare I say—even some much-needed casual talk therapy with the incredible staff—I encountered a decision I did not like. At the time, I felt it violated some sort of freedom or would hinder me from furthering my recovery. Needless to say, I am here to tell you that Resiliency Mind & Body is here to make sure YOU get better, regardless of how you may feel. Dr. L and her entire team will guide you to be a better version of yourself.

I can honestly say that I am better today because Dr. LaFernier and her team LISTENED to my story and devised a treatment plan FOR ME. I thought there was no hope left, and now I legitimately feel excited to be alive!… most days. 🙃

P.S. I cannot stress enough how high the quality and level of support I received from the STAFF was. I wouldn’t have remembered what it’s like to wake up happy if it weren’t for all of you, Loren, Cyrus, Ryley, Jeffrey— I mean I wanna name drop you all but just trust me when I say that this is the team you should trust with your mental health journey.

I have now completed 8 weeks of treatments with "Resiliency Mind + Body".
Specifically two courses of specific therapy.

I have to admit, I have been down the Rabbit Hole for a decades with "traditional" treatment(s).

It has been years since I felt the relief Dr. L provided.

PLEASE, if you feel you are at the end of your rope and exhausted by medications that don't yield the result you hope and pray for, reach out to Resiliency.

From Doctor L, to all her staff.

My only curiosity is why I suffered so long when there was relief within arms reach.

I am beyond grateful.

Sincerely,

Wayne Rizzo

After 4 treatments of Spravato, the results are astonishing. My racing thoughts, anxiety, and preoccupation have decreased substantially. My sleep is much better. Sleep scores have gone from the 60s to the high 80s and 90s.
The practice manager worked with me so I could get a discount when I payed for my treatment in full! So grateful!!
Everyone who I've talked to on the phone and in person has been super respectful.
This is finally an office of Functional/Integrative medicine that walks the talk 🙌🏻
I recommend this place to everyone in the context of Mental Healthcare.

So, this place is so amazing. Having dealt with adhd all my life, I finally found a person and place to help me. So professional, intelligent, and kind, Regina has changed my world by prescribing meds that work. Im no longer cussing and yelling at myself in frustration for misplacing, forgetting, or losing things all together from ADHD. My world is calmer and much less insane without the destraction moving from one project to another while forgetting all about the prior! I've never lived this way in 61 years.
My nerves aren't constantly on edge, ready to beat myself up in a fight or flight. I simply do what is next ( like normal people, I suppose).
Greatful isn't a strong enough word for how I feel, but it will do for now. I dont have to get upset with myself or search Google in a panic looking for a better word to take gratefuls place! Im beyond grateful to have found this amazing place and people who care and have changed my life! There's nobody else I can say that about.
Thank you, Regina and crew, for having the patience I never had until now. You've made my world a far better place to be in. I only wish I got here sooner. However, I probably would've forgotten the name of this place, cussed myself out and lost the directions. Better late than never.
