Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) FAQ

Welcome to our TMS FAQ page. Here, we address common questions about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a non-invasive treatment for depression and other mental health conditions.
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is commonly used to treat depression in patients who have not responded to traditional treatments like medication or psychotherapy.
TMS works by delivering magnetic pulses through a coil placed on the scalp. These pulses create small electrical currents in targeted areas of the brain, which can help to modulate brain activity and improve mood.
TMS is FDA approved to treat depression, anxious depression, OCD, and nicotine dependence. Here at Resiliency, we have designated coils to treat each of these conditions and have had success with off-label uses for numerous other psychiatric and neurological disorders. Call us or use the contact form and we can discuss the broad applications and success rates of TMS.

TMS is generally considered safe. It is a non-invasive procedure with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience mild discomfort at the site of the magnetic coil or a headache, which usually resolves quickly.

During a TMS session, you will be seated in a comfortable chair, and a magnetic coil will be placed against your scalp. You will hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head as the magnetic pulses are delivered. The procedure typically lasts about 10 to 20 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

Serious side effects are extremely rare, but can include seizures (There is a less than 0.1% risk of seizure from TMS, which is lower than many antidepressants)
The standard protocol covered by insurance is 36 sessions over the course of 7 to 12 weeks. Our accelerated protocol is 50 sessions over the course of 6 to 10 days.

Some patients may begin to notice improvements in their symptoms after a few weeks of treatment. However, it can take several weeks to experience the full benefits of TMS.

Yes, you can drive yourself to and from your TMS appointments. The procedure does not impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Clinical data of over 1,300 patients in real practice settings has shown that 82% of patients who have completed at least 30 sessions of Deep TMS, get relief from their depression. Here at Resiliency, we are seeing even better results due to our individualized and holistic treatment plans.

Deep TMS is the most advanced TMS technology available, with a number of key advantages over Traditional TMS systems. The unique coil design of Deep TMS helmets enables deeper and broader stimulation of the brain than traditional coils, resulting in greater activation of neurons, and higher efficacy rates.
