Real World Patient Experience

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-approved therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain. This targeted stimulation has been proven to alleviate symptoms of depression and other mental health disorders, offering new hope to those who may not have found relief through traditional treatments.

TMS therapy is suitable for individuals who:

  • Have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or other mental health disorders.
  • Have not responded adequately to traditional treatments such as medication or therapy.
  • Seek a non-invasive and drug-free alternative to improve their mental health.

Our clinic proudly offers Accelerated TMS, an advanced form of TMS therapy that optimizes treatment duration without compromising effectiveness. With shorter sessions, Accelerated TMS provides the same benefits as traditional TMS, allowing you to reclaim your life with minimal impact on your daily schedule.

TMS therapy is generally well-tolerated by most patients. During the session, you may experience a tapping or clicking sensation on your scalp, but discomfort is minimal. Side effects are typically mild and temporary, making TMS an attractive option for those who wish to avoid the adverse effects associated with medication.

High Success Rates

Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of TMS in treating depression and other mental health conditions. Many individuals experience significant symptom relief, even after other treatments have proven ineffective.

In our clinic, we are seeing 75% remission rates for depression and PTSD with Insurance-Covered Protocols.

Personalized Treatment

Our experienced psychiatrist tailors each TMS treatment plan to the individual needs of our patients, ensuring the highest likelihood of success.

Before and After Brain Effects of TMS

PET scan images illustrate differences in brain activity patterns associated with depression and related conditions, with certain regions showing reduced activity before treatment. After a course of Deep TMS, the scan depicts more balanced activity in mood-related brain networks, reflecting improved neural functioning. While individual results vary and PET scans are not used to guide routine clinical care, these visuals help explain how TMS can modulate brain circuits involved in mood regulation.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) FAQ

Welcome to our TMS FAQ page. Here, we address common questions about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a non-invasive treatment for depression and other mental health conditions.

What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is primarily used to treat depression in patients who have not responded to traditional treatments like medication or psychotherapy.
TMS works by delivering magnetic pulses through a coil placed on the scalp. These pulses create small electrical currents in targeted areas of the brain, which can help to modulate brain activity and improve mood.

TMS is most commonly used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) but can also be effective for other conditions such as anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is typically used when other treatments have not been effective.

TMS is generally considered safe. It is a non-invasive procedure with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience mild discomfort at the site of the magnetic coil or a headache, which usually resolves quickly.

During a TMS session, you will be seated in a comfortable chair, and a magnetic coil will be placed against your scalp. You will hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head as the magnetic pulses are delivered. The procedure typically lasts about 10 to 20 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

The number of TMS sessions required varies from person to person. A typical course of treatment consists of 36 daily sessions over a period of four to six weeks. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs by your healthcare provider.

The most common side effects are mild and include headaches, scalp discomfort, or mild tingling. Serious side effects are rare but can include seizures. Your healthcare provider will discuss potential risks and monitor you closely during treatment.

Some patients may begin to notice improvements in their symptoms after a few weeks of treatment. However, it can take several weeks to experience the full benefits of TMS.

Yes, you can drive yourself to and from your TMS appointments. The procedure does not impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Many insurance plans do cover TMS, but coverage can vary. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand your benefits and any potential out-of-pocket costs.

To schedule a consultation or learn more about TMS, please contact our office at 949-806-6901 or fill out our New Patient Inquiry Form. Our team will assist you with the scheduling process and answer any additional questions you may have.

TMS for PTSD

What is TMS For PTSD and how is it provided at your Newport Beach office?
TMS For PTSD uses non-invasive magnetic pulses to stimulate brain circuits involved in trauma, fear processing, and emotional regulation. At our Newport Beach office we evaluate your history and symptoms to confirm PTSD and rule out contraindications before recommending a personalized TMS protocol. Typical treatment involves daily sessions over about 4–6 weeks, with each visit lasting roughly 20–40 minutes. Many patients notice improvements in sleep, intrusive memories, and hypervigilance within a few weeks, and we monitor progress to adjust the plan or recommend maintenance as needed.

TMS for Anxiety

How does TMS For Anxiety work and who is a good candidate in Newport Beach, CA?
TMS For Anxiety targets brain regions that drive excessive worry, panic, and physiological stress responses to help normalize activity and reduce symptoms. Good candidates are adults whose anxiety hasn’t responded sufficiently to therapy or medications, and who pass a medical screening for safety. Sessions are typically outpatient, brief, and require no anesthesia, so you can return to daily activities after each visit. We track symptom changes regularly and can combine TMS with psychotherapy or medication management for a more comprehensive approach.

TMS for Depression

What results can I expect from TMS For Depression at the Newport Beach office, and how long before I feel better?
TMS For Depression is FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder and often helps patients who haven’t improved with medications or talk therapy. Some people notice mood, sleep, or energy improvements within the first 2–4 weeks, while others require the full 4–6 week course for substantial benefit. We use standardized symptom scales to monitor response and may recommend booster or maintenance sessions if gains begin to fade. Insurance often covers Deep TMS for depression when criteria are met, and we assist with benefit verification and prior authorization.

TMS for OCD

Is Deep TMS For OCD available at Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine in Newport Beach, and what should I expect?
Yes — Deep TMS For OCD is an FDA-cleared option that targets deeper brain circuits tied to obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. It’s generally reserved for adults with treatment-resistant OCD who have not responded sufficiently to medications and behavioral therapy; a clinical evaluation and screening are required before starting. Typical treatment is daily sessions for several weeks, and many patients experience reduced compulsions and intrusive thoughts within a few weeks to months. Side effects are usually mild (scalp discomfort, headache) and safety is ensured through careful screening and monitoring.

Spravato

What is Spravato and how does it fit alongside TMS services at your Newport Beach office?
Spravato is an FDA-approved esketamine nasal spray used with an oral antidepressant for treatment-resistant depression and certain cases with suicidal ideation; it works rapidly for many patients. Because Spravato can cause dissociation and blood pressure changes, doses are administered under supervision and patients are monitored for a period after each session at our Newport Beach office. Some patients receive Spravato as a standalone rapid intervention, while others combine or sequence it with TMS and ongoing psychiatry care depending on clinical goals. We screen for medical risks, verify insurance coverage, and coordinate scheduling so your treatment plan is safe and streamlined.

I can’t say enough good things about my experience at Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine, especially because of Cyrus, my TMS technician. He is skilled, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in his patients’ well-being.

Cyrus is present and attentive at every session, checking in on how I’m doing and my comfort level during treatment, answering my questions thoroughly, and quickly communicating any concerns to Dr. L so adjustments can be made when needed. I always feel supported and truly like I’m in the best hands.

I also want to recognize Jeffery (another TMS technician), Rylee (who is incredibly responsive), and Loren on the office/admin side, for their warmth and kindness. They bring so much positive energy and add to the professional, trusting atmosphere of the clinic.

I’m very grateful for the care I receive here and highly recommend this team to anyone considering treatment.

I rarely leave reviews, but I feel a responsibility to warn others about my experience at Resiliency Mind & Body Medicine.

The TMS treatment I received here was deeply disappointing. From the very beginning, I felt like just another number—not a patient receiving individualized care. They use the Brainsway machine, which I later learned is considered less effective than newer models. Even worse, they kept my treatment at low settings the entire time and never re-evaluated or adjusted my protocol, even though I repeatedly shared that I wasn’t improving. It honestly felt like no one was paying attention to my progress.

Communication with the office was another major issue. It was nearly impossible to get answers or call-backs, and when I did, I often felt dismissed. Loren Mendez was particularly cold and unhelpful and cold.

I left this clinic feeling worse—emotionally and financially drained. The lack of empathy, poor communication, and cookie-cutter treatment approach made me feel completely unheard. If you are considering TMS, please do your research and find a provider who takes the time to tailor your treatment, checks in regularly, and actually cares about your outcome. I wish I had gone elsewhere from the start.

TMS truly changed my life. I was debilitated by depression and anxiety for years. I had done a variety of therapy and mental health treatment and tried countless meds which helped alleviate some symptoms but never got me to a place where I felt like my anxiety and depression was manageable. I had a psychiatrist refer me to TMS and I haven’t been the same since. The experience at resiliency mind and body was more than I could have asked for. I truly looked forward to coming to my treatment everyday. My TMS tech, Cyrus, was so personable, and made me feel like my progress and treatment was important to him. I looked forward to updating him daily with my progress. I couldn’t be more grateful to have him as my tech. If you’re thinking about trying TMS I highly recommend the treatment especially at resiliency and ask for Cyrus!

I want to take a moment to recognize our two secretaries for their incredible work. They are consistently kind, patient, and attentive, and they truly care about everyone they help. Their professionalism, organization, and positive attitude make the office run smoothly every day. They go above and beyond to make people feel supported and valued, and their dedication does not go unnoticed. We are so lucky to have them. Thank you Rylee and Loren!

I have never before found a psychiatric group that is so clearly dedicated to making people better. I finally feel like I am under the category of of caring CAPABLE people and I cannot wait to see where they guide me in regards to my future mental health care. Would HIGHLY recommend especially if you are tired of being treated like just another appointment. Resiliency will treat you like a human. A+

***After months of treatment with Resiliency Mind & Body—treatment that spanned everything from Spravato and medication management to TMS and—dare I say—even some much-needed casual talk therapy with the incredible staff—I encountered a decision I did not like. At the time, I felt it violated some sort of freedom or would hinder me from furthering my recovery. Needless to say, I am here to tell you that Resiliency Mind & Body is here to make sure YOU get better, regardless of how you may feel. Dr. L and her entire team will guide you to be a better version of yourself.

I can honestly say that I am better today because Dr. LaFernier and her team LISTENED to my story and devised a treatment plan FOR ME. I thought there was no hope left, and now I legitimately feel excited to be alive!… most days. 🙃

P.S. I cannot stress enough how high the quality and level of support I received from the STAFF was. I wouldn’t have remembered what it’s like to wake up happy if it weren’t for all of you, Loren, Cyrus, Ryley, Jeffrey— I mean I wanna name drop you all but just trust me when I say that this is the team you should trust with your mental health journey.

I have now completed 8 weeks of treatments with "Resiliency Mind + Body".
Specifically two courses of specific therapy.

I have to admit, I have been down the Rabbit Hole for a decades with "traditional" treatment(s).

It has been years since I felt the relief Dr. L provided.

PLEASE, if you feel you are at the end of your rope and exhausted by medications that don't yield the result you hope and pray for, reach out to Resiliency.

From Doctor L, to all her staff.

My only curiosity is why I suffered so long when there was relief within arms reach.

I am beyond grateful.

Sincerely,

Wayne Rizzo

After 4 treatments of Spravato, the results are astonishing. My racing thoughts, anxiety, and preoccupation have decreased substantially. My sleep is much better. Sleep scores have gone from the 60s to the high 80s and 90s.
The practice manager worked with me so I could get a discount when I payed for my treatment in full! So grateful!!
Everyone who I've talked to on the phone and in person has been super respectful.
This is finally an office of Functional/Integrative medicine that walks the talk 🙌🏻
I recommend this place to everyone in the context of Mental Healthcare.

So, this place is so amazing. Having dealt with adhd all my life, I finally found a person and place to help me. So professional, intelligent, and kind, Regina has changed my world by prescribing meds that work. Im no longer cussing and yelling at myself in frustration for misplacing, forgetting, or losing things all together from ADHD. My world is calmer and much less insane without the destraction moving from one project to another while forgetting all about the prior! I've never lived this way in 61 years.
My nerves aren't constantly on edge, ready to beat myself up in a fight or flight. I simply do what is next ( like normal people, I suppose).
Greatful isn't a strong enough word for how I feel, but it will do for now. I dont have to get upset with myself or search Google in a panic looking for a better word to take gratefuls place! Im beyond grateful to have found this amazing place and people who care and have changed my life! There's nobody else I can say that about.
Thank you, Regina and crew, for having the patience I never had until now. You've made my world a far better place to be in. I only wish I got here sooner. However, I probably would've forgotten the name of this place, cussed myself out and lost the directions. Better late than never.
