Telehealth psychiatry can make ongoing mental health care much easier to access, especially when treatment involves psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and regular follow-up visits.
At Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine, we provide telehealth psychiatry across California, allowing eligible patients to meet with psychiatric providers through secure video visits without traveling to one of our Orange County offices. That statewide access can be especially helpful for patients who live farther from psychiatric care, travel often, or want the flexibility to manage appointments from home.

The Short Version
- Resiliency offers telehealth psychiatry to eligible patients throughout California.
- Patients must be physically located in California during virtual appointments.
- Telehealth can support psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management.
- California physicians providing telehealth must hold a valid California medical license.
- Secure video visits can be used to discuss symptoms, medications, side effects and treatment changes.
- Deep TMS and Spravato® still require in-person care.
How Does Telehealth Psychiatry Work?
An online psychiatry appointment covers many of the same topics as an in-person visit. During an evaluation, your provider may review your current symptoms, mental health and medical history, medications, previous diagnoses, and how symptoms are affecting everyday life.
For established patients, virtual appointments can support ongoing medication management, including reviewing whether medication is helping, monitoring side effects, and adjusting the treatment plan when appropriate.
The Medical Board of California notes that physicians providing telehealth are held to the same standard of care as they are during in-person treatment.
Does Telehealth Psychiatry Actually Work?
For many mental health conditions, research suggests that it does. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 32 randomized studies involving 3,592 participants found no significant overall difference in symptom improvement between telepsychiatry and face-to-face psychiatric treatment.
That makes telepsychiatry especially useful for appointments centered on conversation, diagnosis, medication management, and treatment planning.
What Can Be Treated Through Telehealth?
Depending on the person and their symptoms, online psychiatric care may be appropriate for:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- ADHD
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Mood disorders
- Postpartum depression
- PTSD
Telehealth psychiatrists can evaluate symptoms, prescribe and manage medication when appropriate, and monitor progress over time. Some situations still require in-person evaluation or emergency care, particularly when symptoms are severe or there are immediate safety concerns.
Why Does Telehealth Matter in California?
California continues to face a major psychiatrist shortage. A 2026 state workforce report estimated a 41.2% statewide shortage of psychiatrists, with especially significant gaps in areas including the San Joaquin Valley and Inland Empire.
Telehealth helps reduce that geographic barrier. At Resiliency, eligible patients throughout California can access general psychiatric care and medication management without needing to live near Newport Beach or San Juan Capistrano.
Do You Have to Be in California During the Appointment?
Yes, you must be physically located in California during the appointment for a California-licensed physician to provide care under that license. If you travel frequently or temporarily leave the state, let your provider know before your virtual appointment.
Are Telehealth Visits Private?
Telehealth services still need to protect patient privacy. Resiliency uses secure virtual appointments for online psychiatric care, and health information remains subject to the same privacy and confidentiality requirements that apply to in-person care.
For some patients, joining from home can also reduce stress related to driving, parking or sitting in a waiting room.
When Do You Still Need to Come Into the Office?
Some psychiatric services cannot be completed virtually. Deep TMS requires specialized equipment that delivers transcranial magnetic stimulation in person. Spravato also has to be administered in a certified treatment setting followed by an observation period.
Your provider may also recommend an in-person visit when your symptoms or medical needs require a more hands-on assessment.
Can You Start With Telehealth and Later Receive TMS or Spravato?
Yes, you may begin with virtual medication management and find that medication provides the relief you need. If depression continues despite treatment, your provider can discuss whether Deep TMS, Spravato, or another treatment option should become part of your plan.
At Resiliency, medication management, TMS, and Spravato are part of the same broader continuum of psychiatric care.
How Quickly Can You Get a Telehealth Appointment?
Resiliency works to make psychiatric care accessible to new patients, with same-week appointments whenever scheduling allows.
Telehealth can remove practical barriers such as driving time, transportation, and distance from a major city. Insurance benefits still vary, so coverage depends on your individual plan.
Is Telehealth Psychiatry in California Right for You?
For many California patients, telehealth makes psychiatric care easier to access and easier to maintain.
You can meet with a psychiatric provider through secure video visits, stay on top of medication management, and continue your treatment plan without regularly traveling to Orange County. And if your needs change, Resiliency can help you transition into in-person treatment when appropriate.
Whether you live in Southern California, the Bay Area, the Central Valley, or elsewhere in the state, psychiatric care may be closer than you think. Schedule an appointment with Resiliency Mind + Body Medicine to get started.
